How this calculator works. Sod area = lawn area × (1 + waste). Rolls = area ÷ roll size, rounded up; pallets = area ÷ pallet size. The defaults — 10 sq ft rolls and 450 sq ft pallets — are the most common US sizes, but farms vary, so confirm and adjust in advanced settings.
The weight estimate uses ≈30 lbs per roll (fresh-cut sod holds a lot of water) — it's there so you don't overload a vehicle or underestimate the labor.
How much sod do I need?
Sod is unforgiving in one direction: too little means visible seams of bare dirt and a second delivery fee, while a few spare rolls patch the inevitable miscuts around beds and walkways. That's why even a perfect rectangle gets 5% added, and anything with curves gets 10%.
The bigger constraint is time, not quantity: sod is perishable. It should go down within 24 hours of harvest — same day in summer heat. Order for delivery on the day you're ready to install, with the soil already prepped, graded, and watered. A pallet sitting in the driveway over a hot weekend is compost.

Buying tips
Order by phone and ask three things: roll size, pallet coverage, and cut date. Pallets are heavy enough to crack driveways and stain pavers — have them dropped on the lawn side. And measure twice here more than anywhere: sod farms often have minimum orders, and returns aren't a thing for living products.

Seed or sod?
Sod costs roughly 10× more than seed but gives you a lawn in a day and works on slopes where seed washes out. Seed wins on price, variety choice, and deeper initial rooting. Fall seeding, spring sodding is the classic playbook.
How soon can I walk on new sod?
Lightly after 2 weeks, normally after 4. Water daily (soaking the soil beneath, not just the grass) for the first 2 weeks, then taper. The tug test tells you when it's rooted — gentle pull, no lift.
Can I lay sod over my existing lawn?
No — sod needs soil contact to root. Kill or strip the old grass, loosen the top 2 inches, grade, and lightly firm. Prep is 70% of a sod job.
How many pallets fit in a pickup?
One, and barely — a full pallet can exceed a half-ton truck's payload. For more than one pallet, pay the delivery fee; it's cheaper than suspension work.
