How this calculator works. Field studs = wall length ÷ spacing, plus one end stud. Extras follow standard framing practice: +2 studs per corner (three-stud corner minus the shared field stud) and +3 per opening (king and jack studs plus header cripples, averaged). Plates = 3 × wall length (doubled top plate + single bottom), divided into your plate-lumber length. A 10% allowance covers blocking, crooked culls, and the header material itself.
Framing a wall: the count and the why
The old carpenter's shortcut — "one stud per foot of wall" — sounds wasteful next to 16-inch spacing math, but it lands close to reality once corners, openings, blocking, and the inevitable warped rejects are counted. Our calculator itemizes what the shortcut lumps together, so you can see where the lumber actually goes.
Spacing is a code-and-purpose question: 16" on-center is the standard for load-bearing walls and anything getting drywall (which is engineered around 16/24 spacing); 24" is acceptable for many non-bearing partitions and saves real lumber on long walls. When a wall might be bearing — if it's perpendicular to joists above, assume it is — frame at 16" and check local code.

Buying tips
Buy precut studs (92-5/8" for 8-ft ceilings) — they're cheaper than 8-ft boards and sized so plates + stud = ceiling height. Cull ruthlessly at the store: sight every stud, reject bows and twists, and buy the 10% extra knowing some rejects will sneak home anyway. Crown lumber all the same direction when you frame.
Common questions
Is my wall load-bearing?
Signs: it's perpendicular to the joists above, sits over a beam or another wall below, or is exterior. If any apply — or you're unsure — treat it as bearing, and get the header sizes from code tables or an inspector, not a calculator.
Why is the top plate doubled?
The second plate ties intersecting walls together and stiffens the span between studs. Single top plates are code-legal in specific engineered cases, but doubled is the default that inspectors expect.
2×4 or 2×6 walls?
Interior partitions: 2×4. Walls carrying plumbing stacks: 2×6 (pipes fit). Exterior in cold climates: 2×6 for insulation depth. The stud count is the same — only the lumber changes.
What about metal studs?
Same layout math, different assembly (screws, track instead of plates). Metal wins in basements — dead straight, rot-proof, termite-proof — and the track replaces both plates, so buy track = 2 × wall length.
