Bags vs. Bulk: When Delivery Beats the Garden Center

Every landscaping project hits the same fork: bags from the store, or a bulk pile in the driveway? The answer is a number, and it's smaller than most people think: past roughly half a cubic yard to one and a half yards (by material), bulk wins — on price, and increasingly on logistics.

The price math

Bagged material typically costs two to three times the bulk per-yard price once you do the conversion. A yard of mulch is 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags — at $4–$7 a bag, that's $55–$95 versus $30–$50 bulk. Topsoil is starker: 36 bags per yard means $110–$180 bagged against $25–$50 bulk. Bulk delivery fees ($30–$80, often flat) eat the advantage on small orders — which is exactly where the crossover comes from.

The weight math

Bags hide the tonnage: that "quick trip" for 20 bags of topsoil is moving 800 pounds through a parking lot, into a trunk (check your payload — most sedans max out around 800–1,000 lbs including passengers), and out again at home. The crossover, by material

Mulch (light, cheap per bag): bulk wins above ~1.5 yards. Topsoil (heavy, pricier bagged): above ~0.5 yards. Gravel and stone (heaviest, hardest on vehicles): above ~0.5 yards, and honestly earlier if the alternative is your own suspension. Below those lines, bags win on convenience, storage, and the ability to return unopened extras.

Bulk-order tips

Have the pile dropped on a tarp (cleanup shrinks from an afternoon to minutes), round up to the half yard (extra always finds a use; a second delivery fee never does), and ask what "a yard" means at your supplier — some scoop generously, some don't, and a heaping loader bucket varies by a third.
