Concrete Slab Cost in 2026: Bags vs. the Ready-Mix Truck

A 10×10 shed pad at 4 inches thick needs 1.23 cubic yards of concrete. In 2026 that's roughly $95–$180 in bags mixed yourself, or $250–$450 delivered by truck after minimum-load fees. The bags look like the obvious savings — until you price the labor honestly.

The bag math

1.23 yards is 56 eighty-pound bags (an 80-lb bag yields 0.60 cu ft). At $5–$8 a bag plus a mixer rental ($60–$90/day — hand-mixing 56 bags in a wheelbarrow is not a real plan), you're at $340–$540 of materials and rental... wait, that already overlaps the truck price. And that's the honest point: bag economics collapse fast above about half a yard. The truck math

Ready-mix runs $130–$180 per yard in most US markets in 2026, but the quote that matters includes the short-load fee: trucks are built for 8–10 yard loads, and orders under 3–4 yards commonly add $75–$150. Even so, for anything driveway-sized the truck isn't just cheaper — it's the only way to place concrete fast enough to finish it properly before it stiffens.

What the money doesn't show

Concrete is a race: from the first water hitting cement, you're screeding, floating, edging, and troweling on the material's schedule, not yours. A truck delivers the whole pour at once — which means you need your forms perfect, your helpers booked, and your finishing tools staged before it arrives. Bags let you learn slowly on small pours; that forgiveness is worth real money on a first project.

The decision rule

Under half a yard: bags. Half a yard to about 1.5: bags plus mixer if you have strong help, otherwise price a short load or a concrete-trailer rental (u-cart, ~1 yard, $80–$150). Above 1.5 yards: truck, always — and order a quarter-yard extra, because coming up short mid-pour creates a cold joint you'll look at forever.
