Crushed stone has angular, broken faces that lock together under pressure; pea gravel is naturally rounded and stays loose. That single shape difference decides almost every use-case question.

Where crushed stone wins

Driveways, paver bases, and anywhere load-bearing stability matters: crushed stone's angular faces interlock and compact into a solid, stable layer that doesn't shift under weight or foot traffic. Where pea gravel wins

Decorative paths, playground surfacing, and drainage applications where water needs to move freely between the rounded stones. It's more comfortable underfoot (no sharp edges) and reads as more finished for garden beds and walkways — but it migrates over time and needs edging to stay contained.

The practical rule
