Is Your Wall Load-Bearing? How to Tell Before You Touch It

If you're even asking this question, treat the wall as load-bearing until proven otherwise. Here's how to actually check, and why the wrong guess can crack your ceiling or worse.

The warning signs

A wall is likely load-bearing if it's perpendicular to your floor joists or roof rafters above (check in an attic or basement where framing is visible), sits directly above another wall or a support beam in the basement, is an exterior wall (nearly always bearing), or runs down the center of the house — center walls carry roof and floor loads disproportionately often.

How to actually confirm it

Check the basement or crawlspace directly below the wall for a support beam or footing lining up with it. Check the attic for how joists run relative to the wall. If your house has blueprints, they'll mark bearing walls explicitly. When in doubt, a structural engineer's assessment (often $300–$600) is far cheaper than an emergency repair after a wall comes down mid-renovation.

Removing or modifying a bearing wall requires a temporary support wall, a properly sized header beam, and usually a permit — not a weekend project.
